Richard’s vast experience and extensive knowledge means that he gives his clients strategic and practical advice tailored to help them. Richard acts for both employers and employees so he can guide clients through what they might encounter in the workplace.

- Negotiation and drafting consultancy agreements
- Advising on unlawful deductions from wages
- Advising on the enforcement of restrictive covenants
Richard is also Head of our Sports Law Unit, having advised on a number of contracts and termination packages for high profile sportsmen and sporting directors. The Unit has advised a variety of national governing bodies, clubs, coaches and participants across many sports including golf, rugby, cricket, football, equestrian sports, swimming and disability sports, including many well known names. Richard established the Rugby Union Players Association in February 2006 which was the first rugby players representative body in the professional era, and was part of the Blythe Liggins team involved in the setting up of the Rugby Coaches Association (a national body aimed at bringing together coaches from both union and league to be their collective voice and representative body) and the Elite Cricket Coaches Association (for cricket coaches of Level IV).
Richard is a former England rugby union international and Cambridge Rugby Blue who represented Cambridge University on the RFU Committee. He became a privileged member of the RFU in 2006, and is also a former Chairman of the RFU Disciplinary panel in the Midlands. Amongst those who have consulted Richard for specialist advice are international rugby coaches, international athletics coaches and county cricket coaches, as well as footballers and rugby players.

Background & Memberships
Richard graduated from Cardiff University and gained a post graduate degree from Magdalene College, Cambridge. He qualified as a solicitor in 1988 at Freshfields in London in their litigation department, before moving to Wragges in Birmingham. He joined Blythe Liggins in 1994 and became a Partner in 1998. He is a member of the Employment Lawyers' Association, the British Association for Sport and Law and the Association of Regulatory & Disciplinary Lawyers.
Given his sporting background, Richard remains a keen sportsman and is Chairman of Ashorne & Moreton Morrell Cricket Club and can be heard commentating on rugby matches for BBC CWR local radio. He is also a fun runner and kick boxing novice who enjoys classical and contemporary music. Richard is a Trustee of Myton Hospices.
