RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN SPIRITS AT TWO CASTLES RUN

15/09/2011

A summer downpour on Sunday did not deter 4,000 runners from pounding the streets from Warwick to Kenilworth in the Two Castles 10k Run.

The event, now in its 29th year, saw a new course record set by Matthew Lole who crossed the finish line in just 32.06 minutes, with the first female Madeline Boardman completing the race in 38.57 minutes.

Organised by the Kenilworth Rotary Club with the help of Leamington Cycling and Athletics Club, it is the first time the event has catered for 4,000 runners, an increase of a third on previous years. Rotary president Graham Tall said the weather had failed to dampen spirits and the club was once again delighted with the turnout and support from more than 200 volunteers.

Rotary expect the event to raise at least £100,000 for their chosen charities. Among the many groups running for charity were ten servicemen and women from 517 Special Section, The Royal Engineers. Raising funds for BLESMA, the national charity for limbless serving and ex service men and women, they ran in desert uniform carrying 20kg backpacks.

Richard Thornton, senior partner of principal sponsors Blythe Liggins Solicitors, whose firm supplied a 20-strong running team, marshals and a water station, said the atmosphere of the event never failed to impress: “We’ve been supporting this run for six years and it’s a fabulous local event to be involved with. Even though the heavens opened everyone was in celebratory mood with lots of families coming to support their runners.”

Jeremy Wright MP added that the event “improves in stature each year” whilst Kenilworth mayor David Shilton said the organisers should be congratulated for creating an event which does so much for the town.
