‘Adults not writing wills’ reveals survey

27/04/2010

The majority of British adults and cohabitating couples have not written a will, according to research published this spring.

In an online YouGov poll, undertaken by children’s charity Barnardo’s, 58% of adults have not created a will while 74% of cohabiting adults are running the same risk.

Barnardo’s found that, of those who have made wills, 61% did so before turning 41 years of age. More than one in five cited having a child as the main reason for creating a will and 23% claimed financial planning was behind their decision.

Commenting on the results, Barnardos said a will is the best way to protect the interests of family and loved ones and Marketing Manager Ginny Harris said many individuals wrongly believe their money will automatically be passed on to their families.

"We know from this poll that most people believe they should make a will but they put it off for a variety of reasons," Ms Harris said. “Dying without a will can cause a lot of problems for those who are left behind," she added.

Interestingly, 32% of those surveyed over 55 claimed they would leave a portion of their estate to charity and invest in worthy causes upon death.

"It is a common misconception that leaving a legacy is only for the very wealthy; but our survey results suggest we are getting the message out that anyone can consider it,” added Ms Harris. "That figure is substantially higher than the 15% of people who currently leave a gift in their will, so we can be optimistic that attitudes are changing.”

Properly detailing the division of estates through legally binding wills is essential when planning an unpredictable future. While legacies can be left for worthy causes and are encouraged, it is important to provide comprehensive instructions and alleviate some of the pain felt following a loved one’s death.
